We’re going to get yet another Coronation Street live episode next year.
The soap will follow in the footsteps of EastEnders, which is also planning a live episode in 2015 to commemorate the London soap’s thirtieth anniversary.
Coronation Street has twice aired live episodes before, for the show’s fortieth and fiftieth anniversaries in 2000 and 2010. 2010’s live episode saw a devastating tram crash and aftermath in some truly spectacular scenes.
The new episode will mark sixty years of ITV and be filmed at Corrie’s new production base in Salford in September 2015. There’s no word yet of what storylines may be explored in the new live episode, but with the air date put so far in the future there’s time to develop some really juicy plots. Speaking of the new live episode, Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn promised, “We’ll be doing all we can to eclipse what’s gone before.”
One has to wonder why soaps are so eager to put out live episodes. The cast and crew have hours of extra work and the finished product has the potential to be a regular episode (albeit with some exciting plot) or a miserable failure, with no way of knowing until transmission. I’d rather my TV was pre-filmed and my theatre was live. What do you guys think? Let us know below!
