Bear Grylls

Bear GryllsBear Grylls has invited men and women to join him on an epic survival challenge, with new episodes of The Island with Bear Grylls starting today at 9pm on Channel 4.

The first series of the show was a hit, averaging 3.1 million viewers with 11% total viewing share. For younger audiences, the viewing share was even more impressive, scoring an average share of 20% amongst viewers aged 16-35.

The concept of the show is simple: how would the modern day man survive in the wilderness? The next step was to get Bear Grylls to drop thirteen British men onto and island and leave them to fend for themselves. The result was entertaining, and at times inspiring, television.

However, the show attracted criticism in its first series for sexism at the concept level. Series two has addressed these concerns, and now a separate group of women will be dropped onto another Pacific island during the series. The new series will alternate between both groups, with the first focusing on the male participants. Viewers will then meet the female group on Thursday night.

It’s set to be more of the same Bear, crazy challenges and clueless contestants, but with a tad more equality. We can’t wait.

The Island with Bear Grylls returns to Channel 4 at 9pm on Wednesday April 8.
