Forget about the overcooked turkey and the arguing relatives, we’re excited about the new Doctor Who Christmas special on December 25 at 6.15pm. Here’s what we know already:
It sounds like what you’d expect from a Doctor Who Christmas special: The Doctor is trapped in the North Pole, accompanied by assistant Clara Oswald and Father Christmas (played by Nick Frost), and surrounded by terrifying monsters. Showrunner Steven Moffat has described the episode as a bit like Miracle on 34th Street meets Alien, which sounds, well, a lot like a Doctor Who Christmas special. It’s based off a ’60s comic strip featuring the first Doctor, William Hartnell.
Nick Frost plays Father Christmas, and Steven Moffat thinks he is perfect, saying: “I am a total believer in Santa Claus and Nick Frost who plays Santa Claus looks like Santa Claus and actually if Santa Claus was to choose an earthly name it would actually be Nicholas Frost. I think he might actually be Santa Claus – in fact I think he is!”
Clara’s future will be decided: It was reported earlier this year that Clara’s days with the Doctor were numbered, and the character this year suffered the loss of boyfriend Danny Pink after a difficult courtship through series eight. It would make sense for her character to part ways with the Doctor, but the BBC are keeping tight-lipped.
